According to the 2012 Florida's County and Jurisdictional Reported Domestic Violence Offenses Report, there were 13,766 reported cases of domestic violence in Duval County. Imagine how many more cases have not been reported due to fear. Abused women, men, and children, are suffering in Duval County. They are overflowing the organizations with safe houses that are already established. Shofar Media & Publishing Corp: Editor P.K. Mickens was given a vision in November 2013 to organize a fashion show that was all about high heels. The goal of the event was to raise funds for (D.I.P.) a domestic violence organization to open a safe haven for abused women & children.
During the course of her planning, a Jacksonville city official solicited her and expressed interest in partnering with Ms. Mickens vision. Unfortunately, this partnership evolved into something in which the focus became more about the abuse of power, control, and the advancement of political objectives instead of the social issue. It grieved Ms. Mickens’ spirit because not only was her past used to discredit her entrepreneurial character, but the Heels & Hearts event suffered a major setback.
The city official contacted sponsors of the event and the featured celebrity guest, Lisa Raye, and told her that Ms. Mickens stole money from the City of Jacksonville to pay Lisa Raye a deposit. This official also stated that the editor had financial trouble and no expected attendees. Sponsors, invited guests, and event attendees were told to not support any of Ms. Mickens ministries and businesses due to her past. This act led to calls, texts, and questions about dishonest dealings with the City of Jacksonville.
“I am personally affected because I respected her as my pastor and spiritual leader. I served in the ministry and helped where she assigned me. My existence has been affected with unscrupulous accusations, verbal slander, defamationof my character and reputation. She has been calling different Individuals slandering me, yes I am a convicted felon and when I became a member of her church it didn't matter because she could used me. I paid my debt to society and was released. I am not ashamed of God’s amazing grace who saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I am found, was blind but now I see....”
Ms. Mickens adamantly states that she has never received any money from the City of Jacksonville. The organization that she advocates for (D.I.P.) was offered a city grant, but she and the organization declined. What saddens Ms. Mickens the most is that a city leader would slander a young woman called to make a difference in the lives of battered women, men, and children. As a result of the city official's actions, Lisa Raye, a celebrity actress and model, decided not to be a part of the event scheduled on April 25. The deposit was forfeited, the charity event was cancelled until further notice, and another Jacksonville domestic violence safe haven was temporarily delayed.
The both organizations has suffered a financial loss due to one person’s political agenda. Heels & Hearts was not about helping someone gain public accolades; it was about putting a face on domestic violence and saving lives.
Despite the opposition, Ms. Mickens is still dedicated to finding different avenues to support her vision. Too many lives are at stake for her not to do so.
